Pérez Implosion Sinks Marlins as Padres Roll 7-2

MLB

So much for that "elite peripherals" advantage. The Padres stomped into Miami and hung seven runs on Eury Pérez and the Marlins in a 7-2 laugher that extended Miami's losing streak to eleven games and left our Marlins -134 pick looking as lost as Florida's playoff hopes.

Pérez, the supposed ace with the 0.85 ERA edge, got shellacked early as San Diego's lineup treated his "meaningful advantage" like batting practice. Meanwhile, JP Sears—the guy we basically called a batting practice pitcher at 4.38 ERA—cruised through Miami's anemic offense like he was channeling prime Maddux. The Padres built their lead methodically and never looked back, turning those vaunted Marlins home splits into a punchline.

The market moved toward Miami before first pitch, "sharp money" supposedly recognizing the pitching mismatch. Turns out the only thing sharp about this game was how quickly the Padres carved up Pérez. When you're riding an eleven-game skid, no amount of K/9 ratio or WHIP differential saves you from getting boat-raced at home.

The Padres are rolling. The Marlins are reeling. And that -134 price? Pure sucker bait. Sometimes the obvious play—fade the team that can't buy a win—is the right play. Lesson learned.
