Pirates Bats Go Silent as Cardinals Roll, DarkHorse Pick Fizzles

MLB

Well, that was ugly. The Pirates limped to a 4-1 loss at Busch Stadium, and our -118 ticket on Pittsburgh is headed straight to the shredder.

The handicap looked solid on paper—Jared Jones' strikeout stuff versus Quinn Mathews' bloated 6.43 ERA should've tilted this Pittsburgh's way. Instead, Jones couldn't capitalize on the matchup advantage, and the Pirates offense decided to take the afternoon off. One measly run against a Cardinals staff we expected them to tee off on? Brutal.

St. Louis did exactly what home favorites do when they're supposed to lose: they played clean baseball and let the visitor beat themselves. The Cardinals pushed across four runs—nothing explosive, just steady, professional execution—while Pittsburgh's bats went colder than a February night in PNC Park.

The rest advantage? Didn't matter. The pitching edge on paper? Evaporated. Sometimes the numbers lie, and sometimes a team just doesn't show up. The Pirates were 3-6 on the road recently for a reason, and they reminded us why today.

Final tally: Cardinals 4, Pirates 1. DarkHorse pick: MISSED. The ERA gap was real, but you can't win baseball games if you can't score runs. Onto the next one—this league has a way of humbling you in a hurry.
