Pirates Flip the Script, Dotel Outduels Harrison in 7-4 Upset

MLB

So much for that 0.86 ERA gap mattering. The Pirates torched Kyle Harrison and the Brewers 7-4 at PNC Park, sending DarkHorse's -145 Milwaukee play straight into the loss column. Turns out Wilber Dotel didn't read the scouting report about being the inferior starter—he kept the Brewers' bats quiet enough while Pittsburgh's offense did the heavy lifting.

Milwaukee's vaunted 3.56 team ERA looked more like a suggestion than a season-long standard, as the pitching staff coughed up seven runs to a Pirates lineup that clearly didn't care about form differentials or recent streaks. That 7-3 record in the last ten? Means nothing when you can't execute on the road, where those 6.33 runs allowed per game away from home suddenly feel very real.

The Brewers managed four runs, but it wasn't nearly enough against a Pittsburgh squad that took full advantage of home cooking. Harrison's supposed edge evaporated, Dotel held serve, and the 59.2% implied probability we hung our hat on turned into a cold reminder that starter metrics don't pitch the game—actual pitchers do. Sometimes the underdog bites back, and tonight the Pirates had all the teeth. Tough loss, move on to the next card.
