Pirates Fold Late as Giants Steal 5-4 Road Win, DarkHorse Pick Goes Down Swinging

MLB

The Pirates had every reason to win this one at home—and for eight innings, they looked poised to do exactly that. Pittsburgh carried a 4-3 lead into the ninth, seemingly validating DarkHorse's call on Pirates ML despite both starters living down to their bloated ERAs. Jared Jones and Landen Roupp each leaked runs early, but Pittsburgh's bats—led by the projected firepower of Lowe, Cruz, and Gonzales—manufactured just enough offense to stay ahead.

Then the ninth inning happened. San Francisco scratched across two runs to flip the script, 5-4, and suddenly a solid home-field advantage and favorable lineup matchups meant nothing. The Giants, who'd been dreadful on the road at 2-5 and averaging three runs per away game, found clutch hitting precisely when it mattered most. Pittsburgh's bullpen, tasked with protecting a late lead, couldn't seal the deal.

DarkHorse's reasoning was sound: below-average pitching on both sides, Pirates at home with the better recent offensive profile, Giants reeling away from Oracle Park. But baseball doesn't care about logic when your closer can't find the zone. The pick missed, and it stings—not because the analysis was flawed, but because Pittsburgh had nine innings to put this one away and choked on the final three outs.
