Lake Bachar's supposed 1.52 ERA advantage? Meaningless. The Cardinals tagged him early and often, building a comfortable lead that Pittsburgh never threatened. Meanwhile, Matthew Liberatore—the guy we faded for his 5.36 ERA and shaky control—suddenly looked like vintage Bob Gibson, holding the Pirates to a single run while the Cardinals' bats did the rest.

So much for momentum. So much for that dominant 5-2 season series edge. The Pirates offense, which managed just two runs in yesterday's shutout win, proved that wasn't some defensive masterpiece—it was a sign their bats had gone ice cold. They couldn't solve Liberatore, couldn't manufacture anything against a Cardinals staff we expected them to feast on.
