Pirates Take Care of Business, Giants Never Threaten in 5-2 Loss

MLB

The Pirates did exactly what home favorites are supposed to do, dispatching the Giants 5-2 in a game that was never really in doubt. San Francisco couldn't solve Tidwell or generate any sustained offense, and that modest 0.70 ERA gap we cited? Turns out it mattered more than the spreadsheet suggested.

Pittsburgh built their cushion early and controlled the tempo throughout, making our Giants +1.5 pick look foolish by the middle innings. We leaned on historical coverage rates and the idea that a -165 favorite "lacks dominance," but the Pirates played like they had plenty of it. The Giants needed to either win outright or keep it to a one-run game—they did neither, losing by three and missing the runline by a full two runs.

This one stings because the logic was sound on paper: minimal pitching advantage, reasonable odds, high historical coverage. But baseball doesn't care about your probabilities when one team simply executes and the other doesn't. The Pirates were the better side tonight, plain and simple. Sometimes the favorite wins comfortably because they're actually better, not because of some statistical anomaly. Lesson learned—or at least it should be.
