Rangers Fall Short in Houston Despite deGrom's Quality Start

MLB

The Astros squeezed past Texas 5-4 in a game that exposed the fatal flaw in backing starting pitching alone. Jacob deGrom delivered exactly what we expected—six solid innings, two earned runs, vintage stuff—but the Rangers bullpen promptly torched our -120 ticket in the seventh and eighth. Houston's bats woke up late against Texas relievers, manufacturing three runs over the final three frames to erase a 4-2 deficit.

Ronel Blanco? Yeah, he got knocked around early just like his 8.10 ERA suggested, surrendering four runs through five innings. The Rangers offense did their job against the replacement-level starter. Pederson and Langford combined for three hits and two RBIs, validating the matchup advantage we identified. But here's the thing about baseball—you need 27 outs, not just 18.

The Astros' ninth-inning magic continues, now 10-1 in their last eleven, and Minute Maid Park remains a house of horrors for visiting teams trying to protect leads. Texas had the pitching edge where it mattered most on paper, but Houston's bullpen depth and late-game execution proved superior when the game hung in the balance. Sometimes the better starter loses. Tonight was one of those nights, and our bankroll took the hit.
