Red Sox Grind Out Tight Win in Oakland, Cash ML Ticket at -178

MLB

The Red Sox did exactly what we needed them to do Thursday afternoon, escaping the Coliseum with a 4-2 victory that cashed our ML ticket at -178. Not pretty, not dominant, but a win's a win when you're backing the better squad.

Payton Tolle delivered as advertised, holding Oakland's punchless lineup in check and validating that 3.44 ERA edge we hammered in the writeup. Boston's bats didn't explode for five or six runs like their recent 4.87 R/G average suggested they might, but four was plenty against an Athletics club that's now 3-13 over their last sixteen and circling the drain at home. Oakland managed just two runs against a Red Sox staff that's been locking down games during this torrid 13-2 stretch.

Jack Perkins? Hittable, just like we said. The Athletics starter couldn't keep Boston off the bases, and while the final margin was tighter than the pitching matchup implied it should be, the fundamentals held. Boston's superior form, run differential, and starting pitching advantage were always going to be the difference. Oakland's bullpen fatigue showed late, and the Red Sox capitalized when it mattered.

Sixty-two percent implied probability felt light for a team this hot against a pitcher this bad. We got our money's worth. On to the next.
