Red Sox Pitching Edge Evaporates in Oakland as A's Walk Off 4-3

MLB

Well, that stings. The Red Sox carried a 1.84 ERA advantage into the Coliseum and still managed to cough up a 4-3 walk-off loss to the Athletics, torching our ML pick in the process. Jake Bennett showed up as advertised early, but baseball's a nine-inning affair, and Boston's bullpen decided to play hot potato in the late frames.

The Red Sox offense never found its rhythm against Gage Jump, who somehow kept that bloated 4.42 ERA from imploding despite his 1.42 WHIP suggesting he lives in traffic. Boston plated three runs but couldn't deliver the knockout punch when it mattered. Meanwhile, Oakland scratched across four, including the game-winner in their final at-bat, because of course they did.

This one hurts precisely because the numbers said it shouldn't happen. A 13-2 run over the last 15 games, a five-game road win streak, a nearly two-run team ERA gap—all rendered meaningless when you can't hold a lead in your opponent's ballpark. The Athletics, sporting a ghastly 5.35 ERA coming in, found just enough cracks in Boston's armor to steal one at home.

Credit where it's due: Oakland executed when it counted. But this loss underscores the cruel reality that even overwhelming statistical edges mean nothing if you don't finish. Frustrating miss.
