Red Sox Survive Oakland Scare, Cash -154 Ticket in Tense Victory

MLB

The Red Sox did exactly what they needed to do in Oakland, grinding out a 4-2 win that validated our -154 play and reminded everyone why pitching edges matter. Patrick Sandoval didn't dominate, but he didn't have to—he simply outclassed Jacob Lopez, who once again proved why that 6.12 ERA isn't a typo. Boston's offense manufactured just enough against an Athletics staff that ranks dead last in team ERA, scratching across four runs while Sandoval and the bullpen kept Oakland's bats quiet when it counted.

This wasn't pretty, but it was predictable. We hammered the 2.91 ERA gap between starters in our original analysis, and that differential showed up exactly as advertised. The Red Sox improved to 13-3 in their last 16 while Oakland's misery tour continued—they're now 4-12 in their last 16 and look every bit like a team treading water. The final margin was tighter than the talent gap suggested, but that's baseball in a two-run game.

Bottom line: we laid the juice, the Red Sox delivered, and the pick hits clean. Sometimes you pay for quality and actually get it. Sandoval wasn't Cy Young, but against Lopez and this Oakland staff, he didn't need to be. Chalk up the W and move on.
