Red Wings Fall Short Despite Gibson's Heroics as Jets Steal Road Win
Well, that goaltending edge didn't quite translate the way we hoped. The Jets squeezed out a 3-2 victory at Little Caesars Arena, sending our Red Wings ML pick down in flames despite John Gibson doing everything humanly possible to deliver.
Gibson was every bit the elite netminder we projected, but here's the problem: Connor Hellebuyck decided to remember he's a former Vezina winner. While Gibson kept Detroit in the fight, Hellebuyck matched him save for save when it mattered most. The Jets' depth scoring made the difference—three different goal scorers capitalized on the chances Winnipeg created, while Detroit's offense sputtered when they needed clutch production.
The back-to-back, road-weary narrative? Winnipeg laughed at it. They played with pace and structure that belied any fatigue, while the "rested" Red Wings looked like the tired squad down the stretch. Detroit's two goals weren't nearly enough offensive support for Gibson's stellar performance.
Sometimes the fundamentals check every box and the result still goes sideways. Gibson gave Detroit the goaltending we promised. The rest advantage was real. But hockey's a team game, and the Jets' collective effort—especially Hellebuyck shaking off that .895 mark—trumped our thesis. Credit where due: Winnipeg gutted out a road win when everything suggested otherwise.
