Game Recap
Red Wings Fall Short in Tampa, Lightning Edge It 3-2
The Lightning squeaked past the Red Wings 3-2 at Amalie Arena, and Detroit's got to be kicking themselves over this one. You don't walk into Tampa and expect charity, but when you're hanging around in a one-goal game all night, you need to find a way to steal it. They didn't.
Tampa did just enough to protect home ice, playing that suffocating defensive style that's become their calling card when leads get tight. The Red Wings pushed, they battled, but two goals don't win many hockey games—especially not on the road against a team that knows how to lock things down in the third period.
Detroit's effort was there, no question. But effort without finish is just a moral victory, and those don't count in the standings. The Lightning capitalized when it mattered, the Red Wings didn't, and that's the difference between flying home with two points versus another "almost" game.
Credit to Tampa for doing what good teams do: winning ugly when they have to. As for Detroit, they're learning the hard way that competing isn't the same as winning. Close games are great experience until you realize you need to actually win them. Another tight loss, another lesson learned—hopefully it sinks in soon.
