Royals Cover in Tight 2-1 Loss as Skubal Rust Shows, Tigers Escape by a Run

MLB

The Royals fell 2-1 in Detroit, but DarkHorse's Royals +1.5 cashed comfortably in a game that validated every concern about Tarik Skubal's return from the IL. The Tigers ace looked mortal coming off elbow issues, and while he kept Kansas City's bats mostly quiet, he clearly wasn't the dominant 2.83 ERA version we've seen all season. Beck Way matched him nearly pitch-for-pitch, doing exactly what mid-rotation arms are supposed to do—keep your team in striking distance.

Detroit scratched out just enough offense to win by a single run, but this was no dominant performance. The Royals' 1-6 road record suggested they'd struggle to win outright, and they did, but that +1.5 cushion was the entire story. The market undervalued the uncertainty around Skubal's workload and effectiveness, and it showed. When you're backing a road dog with run-line value against a pitcher returning from injury and a Tigers lineup that's been grinding through seven straight days of baseball, you're not asking for a miracle—you're asking for exactly this: a competitive game that stays within the number.

The pick hit because the logic was sound. Skubal's rust plus Detroit's fatigue kept this tight, and tight is all we needed.
