Royals Pitching Edge Evaporates in 3-1 Coors Field Clunker

MLB

So much for that Michael Wacha advantage. The Royals limped to a 3-1 loss in Denver, turning our ML pick into expensive confetti and exposing the fatal flaw in banking on pitching metrics at Coors Field—sometimes the bats just don't show up, no matter who's dealing.

Wacha did his part well enough, but Tomoyuki Sugano—fresh off the IL with back questions—answered every doubt by stifling Kansas City's lineup through his outing. The Royals managed just one run against a guy sporting a 4.69 ERA, which tells you everything about their offensive futility. Colorado's pitching staff, supposedly the league's second-worst by team ERA, suddenly looked like the 1995 Braves when it mattered.

The Rockies scratched across three runs and made them hold up, capitalizing on home cooking while the Royals' recent 6-4 form proved meaningless in the thin air. That 1.09 ERA edge we leaned on? Irrelevant when your offense goes into hibernation mode. The pick-em pricing looked sharp on paper at -108, but baseball doesn't care about your spreadsheets when nine guys forget how to hit. Kansas City's "superior" pitching staff got outdueled by a back-injury comeback story. Tough night at the office.
