Royals Smash Twins 8-2, DarkHorse's Dobnak Fade Backfires Spectacularly

MLB

Well, that didn't age well. The Twins limped into Kansas City as DarkHorse's -148 favorite, armed with Joe Ryan's "legitimately above-average" strikeout upside and facing a depleted Royals lineup supposedly in freefall. Instead, Kansas City put up eight runs and sent Minnesota packing in a laugher that made our pick look like we'd been reading the wrong scouting reports.

Ryan's vaunted 10.10 K/9? Didn't matter. The Royals, missing Bobby Witt Jr. and Vinnie Pasquantino, somehow forgot they were supposed to be toothless and hung eight on the board while the Twins managed just two measly runs. So much for exploiting that four-game skid and offensive drought—turns out a struggling team at home with nothing to lose can still ruin your bankroll.

Our thesis leaned hard on Randy Dobnak's inevitable regression and Minnesota's pitching edge. What we got was a reminder that baseball doesn't care about your BABIP projections when the other team decides to actually hit. The Royals' 5.4-to-3.0 run differential over their last five? Cute stat. They just dropped eight on a supposed playoff contender.

Twins backers got torched. DarkHorse got humbled. The Royals cashed tickets and reminded everyone why you never trust a favorite laying juice on the road against a team with nothing left to lose. Missed badly.
