Sabres Fall 4-3 in Montreal Despite Goaltending Edge Narrative
The Sabres dropped a 4-3 decision in Montreal on Tuesday, torching our +125 underdog ticket in the process. So much for that goaltending edge we sold you on—turns out neither netminder wanted to stop pucks when it mattered.
Buffalo's back-to-back fatigue showed up exactly when you'd expect: late. After trading chances through sixty minutes of sloppy hockey, the Canadiens found a way to edge ahead and hang on for the home win. Jakub Dobes, he of the ghastly .856 save percentage and 4.44 GAA coming in, somehow did just enough to backstop Montreal past a Sabres squad that couldn't capitalize on their supposed crease advantage. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen wasn't the disaster we feared, but three goals against isn't exactly Vezina territory either.
The underlying thesis wasn't wrong—Montreal's goaltending has been demonstrably worse all season—but hockey's a cruel mistress when small samples collide with tired legs. Buffalo pushed, but playing your second game in as many nights against any NHL roster is a grind, home goalie warts and all. The +125 price offered theoretical value; the actual result offered nothing but a losing slip. Sometimes the math checks out and the scoreboard doesn't. That's hockey, baby.
