St. Louis Settles for Road Point After Squandering ML Chance in Portland

MLS

St. Louis CITY SC walked into Providence Park and grabbed a 2-2 draw, but this one stings for anyone who backed the ML at +185. The visitors had every reason to believe they could steal three points—superior defensive metrics, a healthier squad, and a five-point cushion in the standings—but couldn't close the deal when it mattered.

CITY showed flashes of the quality that's kept them fifth in the West, twice finding the back of the net against a Portland side that's leaked goals all season. But that vaunted defensive edge we touted? It evaporated just enough to let the Timbers claw back level both times. Portland, playing with a makeshift lineup thanks to five injury absences, somehow manufactured two answers and refused to fold at home.

The draw extends St. Louis's unbeaten run to eleven matches (7-0-4 now), which is admirable, but moral victories don't cash tickets. We projected a road win based on underlying numbers and recent form, and while CITY avoided defeat, they couldn't convert territorial superiority into the result the data demanded. Portland's xG concerns remain real, but grit and home crowd energy papered over the cracks for ninety minutes.

Bottom line: our ML call missed. St. Louis got a point; we got a push at best if you played the draw-no-bet. Frustrating, but that's road soccer.
