The Paddock Report: Pacers +7.5 Misses as Nuggets Win 114-102
Denver 114, Indiana 102. Our Pacers +7.5 ticket is a miss, and the reasoning deserves a straight look.
The lean rested on a projection of Denver by roughly 4 to 5 after adjusting for pace and home court. To cover, Indiana only needed to lose by seven or fewer. Instead, the Nuggets won by twelve, well outside what the model expected. We flagged the edge as thin from the start, with samples of just seven and nine games, which is why this was a small-stake lean. Still, a twelve-point margin is a much bigger swing than the projection saw coming.
The final score alone can't tell us exactly where the model broke down. Denver's offensive efficiency advantage over Indiana's efficiency numbers, and the pace adjustment in particular, are the first places to check against the box score. We also noted that the public may have been paying a premium on Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, which means the market and our model could have leaned the same way and still been wrong.
On the Pacers' side, the case against them at home was built on a 0-4 home record without Tyrese Haliburton. That record now looks a little less like noise. Indiana still has time to find its footing, but a loss by twelve at home is not the kind of result that helps a team argue its way back into the spread conversation.
Pick hit rate is the cost of doing business with small samples. We'll take the miss, note what the model got wrong, and keep the next small lean just as honest.
