We liked Portland on the efficiency profile: a 118.5 offensive rating against San Antonio's 112.4, a 47.6 percent field goal mark against 45.5, and a slightly better scoring margin over similar samples. Both teams were on the second night of a back-to-back with four games in seven days, so we treated rest as a wash. That was a defensible read on paper. But a pick built on seven- and eight-game samples is only as good as those samples are predictive, and tonight the gap between the teams was far wider than the numbers suggested.

The lesson isn't that the analysis was sloppy. It's that a modest value edge is still a bet that can lose by 22.
