Thornton's "Elite" Edge Gets Shredded as Marlins Torch Mets 6-2

MLB

So much for that "significant pitching advantage." The Marlins waltzed into Citi Field and torched the Mets 6-2, turning our Zac Thornton love letter into kindling. That 2.43 ERA? Didn't matter. That 0.91 WHIP we gushed about? Irrelevant. Miami's lineup—the one we acknowledged had better offensive metrics but somehow talked ourselves out of respecting—showed up ready to rake while Thornton got lit up.

We pushed Mets -126 hard, banking on Thornton's "dominance" to overcome Tyler Phillips and Miami's superior bats. The 1.09 ERA gap looked gorgeous on paper, the kind of starter differential that makes you feel smart. Except baseball doesn't care about your spreadsheets when Otto Lopez and Griffin Conine—those .840 and .890 OPS guys we mentioned in passing—are actually locked in at the plate.

Phillips didn't need to be brilliant. He just needed to be competent enough while his offense did the heavy lifting. Final score: Marlins 6, Mets 2. Our pick: MISSED, and it wasn't particularly close.

Here's the lesson: when you're fading a lineup with demonstrably better numbers across the board, your pitcher better be damn near perfect. Thornton wasn't. Miami was. Sometimes the obvious answer—better bats win—is the right one.
