Three Undefeateds and a Whole Lot of Noise: Week 42 Power Rankings

NBA

Four games in and we've got three perfect records atop the league, but let's not kid ourselves about what's real and what's mirage this early.

Boston sits at 2-0 and deserves the top spot—they're the defending contenders with championship infrastructure, and perfect is perfect. Brooklyn at 2-0 is intriguing but needs more runway before we crown them anything. Washington? Also 2-0, but come on. The Wizards have fooled us before, and two wins in October means precisely nothing until they prove they can sustain it past Halloween.

Portland's 1-0 mark keeps them in the undefeated club technically, but one game tells us zero. They're placeholder royalty until they actually play basketball more than once.

The real story is the .667 tier—six teams at 2-1, and this is where the season's actual contenders live. Memphis, Atlanta, Miami, the Lakers, Denver, and Minnesota have all shown they can win while absorbing a loss. That's more valuable information than Washington's cute little streak. The Nuggets and Lakers carry pedigree; the Grizzlies and Timberwolves have the talent to make noise. This cluster matters more than the top.

Golden State at 2-2 is the definition of "wait and see," while the logjam at .500 is utterly meaningless. Fourteen teams between 1-1 and 2-2? That's statistical white noise.

The basement is more telling: Sacramento at 0-3 is already in quicksand, and the Knicks, Spurs, and Thunder at 0-2 better find answers fast. New York winless through two? That's not the script anyone expected.

For betting purposes, fade the undefeated darlings without the résumé (looking at you, Wizards), and start eyeing the 2-1 contenders as value plays before the market corrects. The season's still a baby, but the frauds are already showing their hand.
