Thunder Shock Cavs Despite Injury Apocalypse, DarkHorse Eats Crow on Cleveland -4
The Thunder rolled into Cleveland missing half their roster and promptly embarrassed our analytics desk, taking down the Cavs 117-112 in a game that made our Cavaliers -4 pick look foolish from tipoff. So much for that "massive offensive efficiency edge" — turns out you still need to play defense.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander did exactly what superstars do when the injury report reads like a hospital census: he took over. With Holmgren, Jalen Williams, Wallace, and Caruso all watching in street clothes, SGA had enough help from Oklahoma City's depth pieces to expose Cleveland's home-court mirage. That vaunted 124.3 points per game at home? Held to 112 by a supposedly depleted squad.
The Thunder's 117 points obliterated their recent five-game average of 104.6, making our "minimal support" narrative look particularly stupid. Cleveland's supposed pace advantage never materialized into separation, and their defensive intensity — or lack thereof — let a shorthanded opponent dictate terms down the stretch.
This one stings because the logic was sound on paper. But basketball isn't played on spreadsheets, and Oklahoma City just proved that elite coaching and one transcendent player can overcome a MASH unit roster. The Cavs' home dominance hit a wall, and our -4 never had a prayer. Sometimes the better team on paper just doesn't show up.
