Tigers' Pitching Edge Evaporates as Royals Roll to 5-2 Victory

MLB

Well, so much for that massive ERA advantage. The Royals made our Tigers pick at -118 look foolish, cruising to a 5-2 win at Kauffman Stadium and extending their win streak to five games. Troy Melton's supposedly elite 1.49 ERA? Didn't translate when it mattered. Meanwhile, Noah Cameron—the guy we faded with his 4.16 ERA and suspect 1.22 WHIP—did exactly what Kansas City needed him to do on their home turf.

The Royals' offense, which we acknowledged was heating up, stayed red-hot and punished Detroit's pitching staff that couldn't replicate its sparkling season numbers when the lights came on. That 2.67 ERA differential we hung our hat on? Turns out you still have to execute, and the Tigers simply didn't. Kansas City controlled this one from the jump, building a cushion and never looking back.

Detroit managed just two runs against a pitcher we targeted as vulnerable, which tells you everything about how this one unfolded. The Royals are now 5-0 in their current surge, and riding momentum trumped our spreadsheet analysis. Sometimes the hot team stays hot, home field matters more than the numbers suggest, and a confident squad beats a theoretically superior one. That's baseball. We missed this one, plain and simple.
