Tigers' Pitching Edge Evaporates in 8-5 Home Loss to Orioles

MLB

So much for that ERA advantage. The Orioles waltzed into Comerica Park and hung eight runs on Detroit, turning our Tigers -118 pick into an expensive lesson about trusting regular-season pitching metrics too much. Final: Baltimore 8, Detroit 5, and we're eating crow.

Keider Montero's supposed 0.35 ERA edge over Kyle Bradish? Didn't matter. The Orioles' offense—which we acknowledged had a slight edge—showed up ready to work, exposing the gap between Detroit's 3.61 team ERA on paper and their actual ability to contain a lineup that can hit. Baltimore's bats did exactly what their .025 OPS advantage suggested they could do, and Montero couldn't pitch well enough to justify that -118 price tag.

The Tigers managed five runs themselves, so the offense wasn't completely asleep, but when you're getting outscored by three at home, your pitching advantage has officially ghosted you. Detroit's bullpen couldn't stem the tide either, allowing Baltimore to build and protect their cushion down the stretch.

Credit where it's due: the Orioles' 4-2 away record wasn't a fluke. They came in, imposed their will, and made us look silly for fading their offense. Sometimes the team that hits better just wins—novel concept, right? We missed this one clean.
