Tigers Squander Melton's Gem, Drop Heartbreaker 4-3 to White Sox

MLB

Troy Melton did everything the framework promised and more, but the Tigers still found a way to lose 4-3 to the White Sox in a gut-punch finish at Comerica Park. Our Tigers -134 pick? Dead on arrival.

Melton delivered his usual brilliance through six innings, justifying every bit of that 1.46 ERA pedigree while outdueling Anthony Kay exactly as the 2.50 ERA differential suggested he would. The problem? Detroit's offense treated him like he was pitching a seven-inning scrimmage, manufacturing just enough runs to stay close but never enough to put this one away. The White Sox, meanwhile, scratched across four runs against a combination of Melton's late-inning fade and Detroit's shaky bullpen work.

The final frame was pure agony. Chicago pushed the go-ahead run across in the eighth, and Detroit's ninth-inning rally fell one swing short. That 57.3% implied probability at -134? Turns out the other 42.7% showed up when it mattered most.

This one stings because the pitching matchup played out exactly as advertised. Melton was elite. Kay was merely serviceable. But baseball doesn't care about your ERA advantages when you can't score runs or close games. The White Sox improve to 5-3 in the season series, and we're left wondering how Detroit wasted such a golden opportunity.
