Vancouver Stumbles in Denver, Rapids Steal One Despite Whitecaps' Dominance
The Whitecaps walked into Dick's Sporting Goods Park as Western Conference juggernauts and left with absolutely nothing to show for it. Colorado's 1-0 victory wasn't pretty, but it counted all the same, and our Vancouver -0.5 pick went down in flames despite every logical indicator pointing the other direction.
Vancouver controlled possession, created the better chances, and looked every bit the superior side the numbers promised. They peppered Colorado's backup keeper with quality looks all night but couldn't solve the riddle when it mattered. Meanwhile, the Rapids did what desperate, injury-ravaged teams sometimes do—they found one moment of brilliance or fortune and made it stick.
Colorado's makeshift backline, missing Steffen and Cannon among others, somehow held firm when Vancouver should have been feasting. Credit where it's due: the Rapids defended with their lives and capitalized on their lone genuine opportunity. But let's be clear—this was highway robbery dressed up as a result.
The Whitecaps' 2.10 goals-per-game average meant nothing in the altitude. Sometimes the better team loses, and tonight was Exhibit A. Colorado's -8.43 goals-vs-xG suggested they'd been lucky all season; turns out they had one more miracle left in the tank. Frustrating doesn't begin to cover it.
