White Sox Fall Short in Crosstown Classic as Cubs Edge 4-3

MLB

The Cubs took the crosstown bragging rights Wednesday night, edging the White Sox 4-3 in a game that came down to the wire at Wrigley Field. Chicago's North Siders did just enough to hold off their South Side rivals, who made things interesting late but couldn't complete the comeback.

The Cubs built their cushion early, manufacturing runs through timely hitting and taking advantage of White Sox defensive miscues. Meanwhile, the Sox offense sputtered through the middle innings, leaving runners stranded and failing to capitalize when it mattered most. By the time they finally woke up, the deficit was already established.

Credit where it's due—the White Sox showed some fight down the stretch, scratching across three runs to make it a one-run game. But close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, and tonight the Cubs pitching staff locked it down when needed. The bullpen held firm in the final frames, stranding the tying run and preserving the narrow victory.

For a White Sox squad desperately needing wins, moral victories don't move the needle. The Cubs walk away with the W and the city's temporary bragging rights. Sometimes baseball comes down to who executes in the clutch—tonight, that was the North Siders. Sox fans can take solace in keeping it close, but close doesn't change the standings.
