White Sox Push Cubs Close But Fall Short in Crosstown Showdown

MLB

The Cubs escaped with a 7-5 victory over the White Sox at Wrigley, but it was tighter than the North Siders wanted. Our desk backed the White Sox at +1.5, banking on Luis Castillo's superior arsenal and Chicago's three-game winning streak to keep this competitive. Well, competitive it was—just not quite enough.

Castillo's supposed pitching edge? Didn't materialize the way the numbers suggested. While he kept the South Siders within striking distance, Shota Imanaga and the Cubs' offense did enough to build a cushion that held when it mattered. The White Sox showed flashes of that recent offensive surge that had them averaging nearly seven runs per game, but five runs don't cut it when you're giving up seven.

The +1.5 looked golden through the middle innings, but the Cubs pulled away just enough to turn our winner into a miss. That's baseball—momentum means nothing if you can't close. The White Sox proved they belonged in this fight, riding that hot streak right into relevance, but belonging and winning are different animals.

The Cubs snapped their two-game skid while the White Sox saw their run end. Sometimes the better starter on paper doesn't translate to the better result on the scoreboard. Lesson learned—again.
