Game Recap
Wild Silence Smashville 3-1, Expose Predators' Goalie Miscalculation
The Wild waltzed into Bridgestone Arena and made Nashville's home opener look like a dress rehearsal, cruising to a 3-1 victory that left our Predators ML pick (-125) looking as shaky as Justus Annunen's supposed advantage. So much for that .907 save percentage edge — turns out numbers from last season don't mean squat when Minnesota's depth forwards are buzzing and the Preds can't generate consistent pressure.
Calvin Pickard, the guy we flagged for his .871 struggles, stood tall when it mattered and didn't give Nashville anything easy. Meanwhile, Annunen's "material superiority" evaporated under the bright lights. The Wild capitalized on their chances, potted three, and played the kind of structured road hockey that makes you wonder if losing Brock Faber actually forced them into a more disciplined system.
Home-ice advantage? Might want to check if Bridgestone's ice was even frozen. The Predators managed one consolation goal but never looked dangerous enough to justify our lean. Minnesota's depleted roster showed up ready; Nashville's didn't.
The lesson here: goaltending stats are predictive until they're not, and sometimes the team missing its top defenseman plays *better* defense than the one that's healthy. Tough miss, but that's hockey — and that's why we grind through 82 of these.
