Yankees Bats Go Silent as Cole Can't Overcome Toronto's Timely Hitting

MLB

Well, that starting pitcher gap sure looked significant on paper. Too bad baseball isn't played on spreadsheets. The Yankees limped to a 3-1 loss in Toronto, turning DarkHorse's -148 favorite into another painful lesson about overvaluing ERA splits.

Gerrit Cole brought his shiny 3.35 ERA and elite strikeout stuff to Rogers Centre, and while he wasn't terrible, he wasn't the dominant force we banked on either. Shane Bieber, supposedly washed after his IL stint with that bloated 5.48 ERA, pitched well enough to make us look foolish for fading him at home. The Blue Jays manufactured three runs against Cole and the Yankees' vaunted pitching staff, while Toronto's arms held New York to a single run.

Here's the uncomfortable truth: we got seduced by the numbers and ignored the context. Home field matters. A team riding 10-5 form in their last 15 has momentum. And sometimes a guy coming off injury is hungrier than the stat line suggests.

The Yankees' offense, which we assumed would capitalize on Bieber's struggles, managed one measly run. That's not losing because of bad luck—that's getting outplayed. The Blue Jays did exactly what good home teams do: pitched competently and manufactured enough offense to win.

Tough miss. On to the next one.
