Yankees Blow Lead Late, DarkHorse Pick Sinks in San Diego

MLB

The Yankees couldn't hold a late advantage at Petco Park, falling 3-2 to the Padres in a game that made our -135 recommendation look foolish by the ninth inning. So much for that "clear starting pitching edge."

Max Fried delivered exactly what we promised—quality innings and stinginess—but baseball's a nine-inning affair, and the Padres proved that home cooking still matters even when you're stumbling through a brutal stretch. The Yankees grabbed an early lead and seemed poised to validate every word of our pitching-advantage thesis, but San Diego's bats woke up just enough when it counted. A late rally flipped the script, and suddenly that 1.86 ERA gap between Fried and Buehler felt like ancient history.

New York's offense, which we conveniently didn't worry much about in our writeup, managed just two runs—turns out you actually need to score when your starter deals. The Padres' struggling home offense found just enough punch to squeeze past the Bronx Bombers, improving their miserable recent form at the Yankees' expense.

The loss stings double: Yankees drop to 4-2 on the road, and DarkHorse takes the L on a pick that looked solid on paper but crumbled in execution. Sometimes the better pitcher loses. That's baseball, Suzyn.
