Yankees Fade in Wrigley: Fried Can't Bail Out Anemic Bats

MLB

The Yankees limped to a 5-2 loss at Wrigley Field, turning our Max Fried advantage into another cautionary tale about overrating starting pitching when your offense is running on fumes. We laid -118 on New York banking on Fried's 2.86 ERA edge over David Peterson's bloated 6.09 mark, and while the logic held water on paper, baseball doesn't play out in spreadsheets.

Peterson didn't need to be elite—he just needed to be good enough. The Cubs southpaw kept the Yankees off-balance while Chicago's lineup did the heavy lifting, plating five runs against a combination of Fried and whatever bullpen scraps followed. Two runs from the Bronx Bombers? That's not winning baseball in any ballpark, let alone on the road where you need to impose your will.

The reality check: starting pitcher advantages mean squat when your bats go silent. The Yankees' vaunted 3.28 team ERA couldn't overcome their inability to string together quality at-bats. Cubs took care of business at home for the second straight day, and we're left holding a losing ticket despite the "superior pitching staff" talking point. Sometimes the better team on paper just doesn't show up. This was one of those days.
